2016 Bell Big 5 MTB Series in Zululand

The Bell Big 5 MTB Series got off to a cracking start with the Zini River Estates Buffalo race, the first race in the series, on Sunday 22 May. The weather was magnificent, the entries were up on last year and the routes fabulous. Well done to the Mtunzini Mountainbiking group and the Mtunzini Country Club for a fine race this year.

Andrew Hill did a fine fast finish in the 50km race of 2h01 and first rider home in the 25km race was local Zululander, Calvin Hume in a time of 1h15 and he is a Junior to boot!

The second race in the series, the Empangeni Bolt Centre Leopard Chase, which replaced the Richards Bay Elephant race only 2 months ago is set to become a very popular MTB event. The Empangeni Cane Rates have worked around the clock to set separate routes for the 25km and 50km races ( save for the first 5km and final kilometre to the finish – both of which are jeep track) which is a dream for all race organisers and participants alike. These routes take one through the surrounding game farms and cane farms, natural indigenous bush single tracks (with the aloes blooming right on cue), around dams and streams and over beautifully made bridges, which were made esp for this race. Kudos to them for an outstanding job and with the venue at Addison Park, we will be spoilt to better this wide, generous venue, with its own grand stand too. Expect a fast paced race here.

This year the 10km ride is not being timed and it is being treated as a fun ride until next year when it will be re assessed by the area organisers.

ROAG is doing pre entries, late/ on the day entries, registration, timing and results, so enter online now before the Wednesday midnight of each race or please came early ( from 7am – 8.30pm) to enter, register and to be batched on race day. The first 500 to register will receive an area t- shirt and if you have not collected your long sleeved race Series shirt ( for those that pre entered all five races and entered the Series Challenge) yet, please do so.

The third race of the series is the Kwambo Build it lion MTB race, being held on the 10 July at the Kwambo Club.
The fourth race is the Monzi Hippo MTB race being held on the 4 September at the Monzi Club. The final race is being held on a Saturday, 29th October, in Hluhluwe at the Hluhluwe Privaat skool. This is so we can have the final Series prize giving that evening.

There will be camping available on the school grounds, bonfires, meat and braai packs and a beer garden with much entertainment too, so please make a note of the date and book somewhere to stay if you are not keen on camping.
